Former TV crisis figure warns of harsher media takeover under Babiš government

A veteran of the 2000-2001 Czech TV crisis says today’s push to control public broadcasters is far more brutal.

Reflecting on his role in the television crisis of 2000-2001, the interviewee warns that the present struggle over Czech public broadcasters is considerably more severe. He notes that while the earlier crisis erupted suddenly, one outlet drive is the result of a long-term strategy by the Babiš government, which openly aims to shift fee revenue into the state budget and thus gain direct financial control. The recent vote to eliminate the licence fee is only the first step; forthcoming amendment drafts will define how much of the broadcasters’ budget the government may restrict, effectively silencing news that diverges from its line.

He criticises the ruling coalition for refusing dialogue with opposition and for imposing its will through budgetary measures. The commentator concludes that these actions amount to a preparation for an authoritarian takeover.

Why it matters

It highlights a potential erosion of media independence in the Czech Republic.
