Former White House press secretary edits Trump desk photo, sparking map controversy

Katie Zacharia posted a tribute photo of Donald Trump that showed a blurred map on the Resolute Desk; after criticism she shared an edited version that removed the map, intensifying speculation about East Potomac Park redevelopment.

Katie Zacharia, who served only five days as White House press secretary, shared a celebratory photo of Donald Trump that featured a blurred object on the Resolute Desk, which observers identified as a map of East Potomac Park. The park is the focus of a proposed redesign of the historic East Potomac Golf Links, a project currently contested in court by the D.C. Preservation League. Following online criticism, Zacharia posted a second image in which the suspected map and a guidebook cover were removed through digital editing, fueling claims that the administration is trying to hide redevelopment plans.

Advocacy group Save East Po highlighted the map’s outline as matching earlier renderings of the golf-course scheme. The White House dismissed the scrutiny, with Communications Director Steven Cheung accusing the press of obsessing over an innocuous picture. Meanwhile, Judge Ana Reyes has temporarily halted further tree removal in the park, ordering testimony from senior Interior and National Park Service officials. The episode adds pressure on the administration as the lawsuit proceeds.

Why it matters

It raises questions about transparency of the Trump administration’s plans for a historic Washington park and potential misuse of official imagery.
