Former Youth Court psychologist faces 17 historic sexual offence charges

Ban Teik Tan, a psychologist with decades-long involvement in child-protection and youth-justice programmes, faces 17 historic sexual-offence charges relating to five complainants aged 12-16 between 199199-2005. The allegations include unlawful sexual contact and indecent assault. Tan has entered a not-guilty plea, and his practising certificate has been suspended.
Christchurch District Court Judge Michael Crosbie refused his bid for continued name-suppression and gave him 20 working days to appeal, which Tan later withdrew.
