Fortastra secures $30 million to build maneuverable satellite-defense spacecraft

Southern California startup Fortastra closed a $30 million financing round to develop maneuverable spacecraft that can shield satellites for the United States and its allies.

The funding will be used to advance Fortastra’s satellite-protection platform, which features spacecraft capable of adjusting their orbits to intercept threats. The company unveiled its first two prototype vehicles last week and aims to scale production to hundreds or thousands of units. Investors see the technology as a way to enhance space security for the U.S. and partner nations.

Why it matters

Protecting satellites is critical for communications, navigation and national security as space becomes increasingly contested.
