Fortescue dismisses senior manager after independent harassment probe confirms violations
Fortescue Metals Group terminated a senior executive following an independent investigation that validated sexual harassment and bullying allegations.
Fortescue Metals Group, one of Australia’s largest mining firms, has sacked a senior executive after one outlet's review by MinterEllison confirmed sexual harassment and bullying complaints. The investigation, launched in July, found conduct that violated Fortescue’s policies and corporate values, leading the board’s sub-committee to terminate the individual’s contract without delay. The company thanked participants for their cooperation and pledged ongoing support.
Fortescue emphasized that all employees and contractors, regardless of rank, must adhere to its standards of respect and inclusion. Separately, the firm faces a class-action suit in the Federal Court alleging widespread sexual misconduct at its Pilbara iron-ore mines, with dozens of testimonies describing assault, harassment and discrimination. The case highlights persistent challenges in the male-dominated mining sector’s remote camps.
Why it matters
The dismissal underscores corporate accountability for workplace harassment and comes amid a broader lawsuit over systemic abuse at Fortescue’s mining sites.
