Forty-six firms race to turn fusion research into commercial power
A coalition of 46 companies is pursuing fusion-based electricity generation, having secured $14.6 billion in funding as of early August.
According to the Fusion Industry Association, a nonprofit based in Washington DC, 46 companies are actively working on fusion reactors intended for commercial electricity production. Collectively, these firms have raised $14.6 billion as of 1 August, with capital supplied by venture-capital firms, private investors, utility companies, government grants and data-center operators. A number of the startups spun out of research institutions, while others rely on licensed patents or collaborations with academia.
In addition to power-grid projects, several companies are exploring specialized fusion applications, including the creation of medical isotopes, materials research, and propulsion systems for naval vessels and spacecraft. Most aim to demonstrate a working fusion plant or feed electricity into the grid by the early to mid-2030s, though many academic scientists view those targets as overly hopeful.
