Four boys rescued from cliffside cave after perilous tide at North Yorkshire

Four boys who became stuck in a cliffside cave at Thornwick Bay were saved by coastguard and RNLI crews on Saturday.

A 999 call alerted emergency services to four boys clinging to a cliff at Thornwick Bay in North Yorkshire. The Filey Coastguard Rescue Team and Flamborough RNLI arrived, finding one boy already on shore, another struggling in the surf, and two lodged inside a sea cave. The RNLI quickly retrieved the swimmer and winched him onto a rescue helicopter, after which he was handed to the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

A coastguard cliff team descended the rock face, coming within five metres of the trapped children before deciding that improving tidal conditions made a safe extraction possible. Both cave-bound boys were then pulled out, transferred to the helicopter, and taken for medical checks. The Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team praised the multi-agency effort on social media, highlighting the professionalism and teamwork that prevented a tragic outcome.
