Four decades after Lake Nyos tragedy, safety restored but survivors still haunted
Scientists say the carbon-dioxide-filled Lake Nyos is now safe after installing degassing pipes, yet many locals remain traumatized and reconstruction is stalled by the Anglophone conflict.
On the night of August 21, 1986, Lake Nyos in Cameroon’s Northwest Region emitted a massive carbon-dioxide plume that suffocated roughly 1,700 residents and killed about 3,500 livestock, marking one of the nation’s deadliest natural catastrophes. Researchers later determined that CO₂ had accumulated at the lake’s bottom for years, and a landslide likely disturbed the stratified waters, causing a rapid limnic eruption. In response, engineers installed degassing pipes that have steadily vented the gas, and geologist Isaac Konfor Njilah now declares the lake safe for habitation.
Nevertheless, eyewitnesses such as Tsang Emelda Njah, Kum Samuel and Ndong Frederick Bah recount the horror and continue to live with deep psychological scars. Efforts to rebuild displaced villages are impeded by the ongoing Anglophone crisis, which restricts access and endangers both residents and aid workers. International and governmental agencies find it difficult to operate in the insecure environment, slowing reconstruction and further scientific monitoring. The tragedy’s memory endures, influencing local attitudes toward the lake and highlighting the intersection of natural hazards and conflict.
