Four Italian Bersaglieri wounded in training accident in Latvia
Four soldiers from Italy's 11th Bersaglieri Regiment were injured during a NATO exercise in Ādaži, Latvia, after a non-automatic weapon on an Italian vehicle fired on another vehicle.
In the late afternoon, a training mishap occurred at the Ādaži training area in Latvia involving Italy's 11° Reggimento Bersaglieri, part of NATO's Forward Land Forces. A non-automatic firearm installed on an Italian vehicle fired, hitting another Italian vehicle occupied by four Bersaglieri. All four were rescued and taken to a hospital in Riga; one is reported in serious condition, the others are not in life-threatening danger.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto is in constant contact with Defence Chief of Staff General Luciano Portolano and COVI commander General Giovanni Maria Iannucci regarding the soldiers' status and the investigation. The incident highlights the operational risks faced by NATO's Advanced Land Forces, which are deployed across nine multinational battalions along the alliance's eastern flank.
