Four members of a Hindu family found dead in locked Rangpur home, police suspect strangulation
Police discovered the bodies of a Hindu family of four in a locked house in Rangpur, Bangladesh, and are investigating possible strangulation and robbery.
In Rangpur city, Bangladesh, police uncovered the bodies of Ganapati Chakraborty, a retired schoolteacher, his wife Pritilata, their daughter Agami, and their son Priyam inside their locked home in the Daspara area. The victims were located in different parts of the three-storey house, with the father on the roof and the others on the staircase, under a bed and elsewhere. Subir Chowdhury of the Rangpur Metropolitan CID said the scene suggested possible strangulation and a robbery, though no definitive conclusion has been reached.
Sanatan Chakrabarty, deputy commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, confirmed the initial strangulation suspicion, and the bodies have been sent for autopsy at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. The police commissioner, Mohammad Abdul Mabud, labeled the investigation a priority, while Human Rights Watch has noted broader attacks on Bangladesh’s Hindu minority, though no link to this case has been established yet.
Why it matters
The deaths raise concerns about safety for Bangladesh's Hindu minority and highlight a serious criminal investigation.
