Four Rohingya suspects charged with immigration violations in Kemaman rape case

Four Rohingya men were charged with immigration offences after being detained over an alleged rape of a disabled woman in Kemaman; they remain in custody without bail while the rape investigation continues.

In August, authorities in Terengganu received a report of an alleged rape of a 23-year-old woman with an intellectual disability in Kemaman. Police initially detained three foreign men and later a fourth, all identified as Rohingya, while a fifth individual was freed after his documents proved legitimate. On Aug 30, the four remaining suspects were brought before the Kemaman Magistrates’ Court and denied bail, after which they were charged with immigration offences and the case files were sent to the Terengganu deputy public prosecutor’s office.

Police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin said the investigation into the rape under Section 376 of the Penal Code will continue and that prosecution will depend on the evidence gathered. He emphasized that authorities are responding to public concern and will handle the case transparently, with attention to the victim’s welfare. The investigation remains active as officials await further prosecutorial direction.

Why it matters

The case highlights legal proceedings and public concern over justice for a vulnerable victim of alleged sexual violence.
