Four suspects arrested after a nine-minute lynching in Rio's Copacabana
A 37-year-old man was beaten to death by two security guards and two delivery workers in Copacabana, and the four attackers have been detained on murder charges.
On the night of August 11, Cláudio Rafael Landeiro, 37, rode his sister's bicycle through Copacabana and stopped at a shop to buy a cigarette. Lacking money, he was refused service, and a private security guard confronted him about the bike. The encounter escalated as two more guards and two food-delivery workers joined, beating Landeiro with sticks and fists for nine minutes, delivering 63 strikes.
He remained on the sidewalk, writhing for half an hour until firefighters intervened, but later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital. The Civil Police, using camera footage and witness statements, identified the four attackers, who have been arrested, placed in preventive detention, and charged with murder. Authorities are also investigating possible charges against bystanders who failed to assist.
