Four teens on trial for brutal machete murder of American student in Auckland
Four teenagers are facing trial in Auckland for the April 2025 killing of 33-year-old American PhD student Kyle Whorrall after he stopped at a bus shelter.
In Auckland's Meadowbank suburb, 33-year-old American PhD student Kyle Whorrall was murdered after a routine supermarket trip, according to the Crown’s case presented at the High Court. Prosecutor Taniela-Afu Veikune described how a car repeatedly passed Whorrall at a bus stop, then two occupants exited with a machete, robbed him and struck his head, leaving him dead on the bench. Four teenagers have entered not-guilty pleas, while a fifth has already pleaded guilty to both murder and aggravated robbery.
Defence counsel highlighted that the Crown cannot pinpoint which defendant used the machete and argued that their clients’ involvement is unclear. Lawyers for the Crown noted prior machete-related robberies by two of the accused, and the court stressed that the prosecution must prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt. Justice Simon Mount cautioned jurors to set aside emotion, and the trial is scheduled to resume the following day.
