Foxes pilfer dozens of shoes from campers at Saskatchewan's Great Blue Heron Park

A group of foxes has been stealing shoes from visitors at Great Blue Heron Provincial Park, leaving the park staff to collect over a hundred footwear items this summer.

Great Blue Heron Provincial Park, located roughly 50 kilometres north of Prince Albert, is dealing with an unusual surge of shoe thefts by a small group of foxes. Sonnet McGuire, the park manager, said reports started arriving in early July, describing single shoes abandoned in vegetation, along the road and at the boat launch. The foxes operate in coordinated pairs, with one acting as a lookout while the other snatches the footwear.

The volume of stolen shoes forced staff to replace a small office storage space with outdoor bins, which recently contained about 70 items, and the total number taken this season is believed to exceed 100. Visitors like camper Brenda Andres have seen foxes carrying shoes, and cottager Rachelle Kelln has recovered at least six pairs on her property, including expensive brands. The park now recommends that guests keep their shoes inside their tents or cabins to prevent further losses.
