Framework upgrades entry-level Laptop 12 with new Intel chips and optional features

Framework unveiled an updated Laptop 12 that uses Intel Core Series 3 processors, adds optional backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader, and ships starting at $699.

Framework announced that its low-cost Laptop 12 has been refreshed with Intel's latest Core Series 3 processors, available in Core 3, Core 5 and Core 7 configurations. Memory options start at 8GB and scale to 16GB or 32GB, while a 48GB upgrade can be purchased for $659. The new chips boost efficiency, giving the Core 5 model about 70% longer battery life when streaming Netflix compared with the original Laptop 12.

The device now supports Thunderbolt 4 on two of its four hot-swappable expansion cards and uses faster DDR5 RAM. Optional accessories include a backlit keyboard and a fingerprint reader, both standard on pre-built Core 5 and Core 7 models running Linux. Framework will ship the laptop with Fedora Linux pre-installed, with Windows 11 offered as a $100 add-on. Pricing starts at $699 for a pre-built Linux unit in green, or $549 for a DIY kit in several colors, and shipments are expected to begin in October.

Why it matters

The upgrade brings better performance, battery life and optional features to Framework's affordable, modular laptop line.
