France deploys NATO patrol plane to aid Black Sea rescue after recent ship attacks

A French NATO-operated Atlantique 2 patrol aircraft joined rescue efforts in the Black Sea following a series of drone attacks on commercial vessels, while France and Bulgaria prepared a strategic partnership roadmap.

During a visit to Bulgaria, French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot confirmed that a French Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft, part of NATO operations, has been stationed in the Black Sea for the past two weeks, supporting rescue missions after a wave of drone attacks on commercial ships. Three vessels were struck, with one sinking within minutes about 100 km from Varna. The Comorian-flagged carrier KHORYV was hit near Constanta, resulting in nine survivors, one fatality and three crew members still missing; the General Aviation Inspectorate is leading the search.

EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen voiced profound concern over the heightened Russian activity. An EU initiative aims to establish a Black Sea maritime security platform in Varna and Constanta, providing real-time monitoring and early warning. Concurrently, France and Bulgaria are set to sign a strategic partnership roadmap to deepen cooperation in defence, space, transport and civil nuclear energy.

Why it matters

The deployment shows escalating international involvement in Black Sea security amid rising maritime attacks.
