France launches autumn flu and Covid-19 vaccination drive amid early US flu activity
France begins its seasonal flu and Covid-19 vaccination campaign on 13 October, aiming to boost protection for high-risk groups.
On 13 October, France will commence its annual flu and Covid-19 vaccination campaign, focusing on the most vulnerable populations. Grégory Emery, director-general of health, highlighted that vaccination rates rose last winter yet still fall short of the 75 % level recommended by health officials and the World Health Organization. The campaign seeks to raise immunisation among people aged 65 and over, those with chronic conditions and pregnant women, groups that historically lag behind the desired coverage.
In contrast, the United States is already experiencing an early onset of flu cases, though France has not observed a comparable trend. Covid-19 remains present in the community but, for now, does not place significant strain on hospitals. Authorities stress that improving vaccine uptake is essential to prevent a severe winter health burden.
Why it matters
Higher vaccine coverage can reduce severe flu and Covid cases during the winter, protecting vulnerable populations.
