France launches secret AI platform to counter US dominance in NATO networks

France has unveiled a classified AI system called Arcadia, housed in a subterranean data centre near Mont-Valérien, to bolster digital sovereignty against U.S. AI dominance in NATO.

In a tightly controlled rollout, France has deployed an artificial-intelligence system named Arcadia within a concealed data centre at Mont-Valérien in the Hauts-de-Seine region. The platform, concealed in a simple black metal rack, is intended to enhance the French military’s operational capabilities and secure its digital independence. General Erwan Rolland, who leads the Defence Digital Commissariat created in September 2025, supervises the effort and emphasizes that denying digital access—through satellite interference, cyber assaults, or strikes on data centres—is a vital means of countering opponents.

He also highlights concerns over extraterritorial rules imposed by certain partners, implicitly referencing the United States. Arcadia is a response to NATO’s accelerated upgrade of its military networks, which presently relies heavily on American AI leaders like Palantir and Anduril.

Why it matters

The project seeks to protect France’s military data from U.S. control, reshaping digital power balances within NATO.
