France moves to impose localized curfews after weekend urban unrest

Following a weekend of riots and looting in major French cities, the government announced the use of partial, highly targeted curfews to restore order.

After violent protests and widespread looting erupted in multiple French metropolises, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged a loss of control in certain areas. President Emmanuel Macron rejected calls for his resignation and instructed the interior ministry to act quickly, demanding new tools to stop the rioters. Proposals ranged from declaring a state of emergency to temporarily deploying armed forces, suggested by Bruno Retailleau and Gabriel Attal respectively.

Sébastien Lecornu dismissed those ideas and announced that, starting Monday evening, prefects will set up partial and highly localized curfews in collaboration with local mayors. The measures could affect zones in Paris and other cities like Denain in the Nord department, aiming to limit the ability of looters to operate.
