France Presses Abbas to Undo Postponement of Palestinian Elections Scheduled for 2027

France called on Mahmoud Abbas to cancel his decree delaying parliamentary and presidential elections until September 2027, saying the postponement denies Palestinians democratic rights.

France publicly urged Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to rescind his decree postponing both parliamentary and presidential elections until September 11, 2027. The French Foreign Ministry argued that the delay again strips Palestinians of their right to vote and that democratic, transparent elections are a cornerstone of the State of Palestine, whose recognition by France depends on such standards. The original schedule had parliamentary elections for November 28, 2026, and a presidential vote in early 2027, the first nationwide polls since 2006.

The French statement was mocked on X by legal commentator Eugene Kontorovich and condemned by AIPAC, which accused Palestinian leaders of offering empty promises to Western governments. Analyst Avraham Russell Shalev suggested the postponement stems from concerns that Hamas could win, noting that Western recognition of Palestinian statehood often overlooks governance issues. The decree follows ongoing Israeli military actions and settlement expansion in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Why it matters

It shows how global diplomatic pressure may shape Palestinian democratic prospects amid the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
