France readies extensive police and gendarmerie deployment for October 24 protests

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez outlined a substantial security deployment for nationwide demonstrations on October 24, following the October 17 unrest.

Laurent Nuñez, France's interior minister, briefed the public on the security arrangements for the October 24 demonstrations, scheduled a week after the October 17 disturbances. He said that police and gendarmerie personnel from local stations, republican security companies, and mobile gendarmerie squadrons will be mobilized, supplemented by elite formations like the GIGN, RAID, BRI-PP, as well as canine, mounted and anti-drone units.

Nuñez clarified that these elite groups are intended to relieve regular forces rather than conduct routine order-keeping. Technical resources will be extensive, featuring roughly fifteen water-cannon launchers and about twenty Centaure armored vehicles. The minister's remarks came as authorities continue to withhold full transparency on the exact number of officers involved.

Why it matters

The deployment signals the government's strong response to recent unrest and may affect how protests are policed nationwide.
