France readies large police deployment for upcoming mass protests

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that France will mobilise a substantial police force for the scheduled protests this weekend.

France is preparing a large-scale police operation for the protests slated for the coming weekend, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. The ministry referenced the extensive police effort that helped prevent major disturbances during the previous Saturday's demonstrations, which included special units, armored vehicles and water cannons. Nuñez said the same level of resources will be deployed again and that the police will stay on the streets for as long as required.

He warned that groups prone to violence are likely to be present once more. The government aims to keep the protests from escalating into widespread disorder.

Why it matters

The deployment shows how French authorities are prioritising public order ahead of large-scale protests.
