France Secures Gulf Diesel Supplies to Ease Domestic Fuel Prices

Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain will together provide diesel equal to about 10% of France’s consumption in the coming weeks, aiming to lower fuel costs.

France has arranged for Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to supply diesel volumes amounting to about 10% of its weekly consumption, a move intended to bring down soaring energy prices. An adviser to President Emmanuel Macron explained that larger quantities translate into lower prices for consumers. The deal was largely secured during Macron’s Gulf visit, which started in Kuwait and the UAE and will proceed to Bahrain and Qatar.

Saudi Arabia previously pledged 95,000 tonnes of diesel for both October and November, totaling 190,000 tonnes over two months. The UAE and Bahrain are expected to add another 100,000 tonnes, though the exact delivery schedule remains unclear. Transactions will be handled by French energy group TotalEnergies, whose CEO Patrick Pouyanne is traveling with Macron on the tour.

Why it matters

The imports aim to curb France's fuel price surge, easing public discontent and stabilizing the domestic energy market.
