Frankfurt Airport staff member dies after rare airport malaria outbreak
A worker at Frankfurt Airport has died from malaria contracted in a local outbreak, the first fatal case among six infected employees.
Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport announced that one of its employees died after contracting malaria in a rare airport-related outbreak. Six staff members have been identified with the infection, despite none having visited malaria-risk countries. The Robert Koch Institute reported that the illnesses began between July 4 and 6 and are believed to stem from an Anopheles mosquito transported on an aircraft.
The deceased employee's family was offered condolences by the company. Ongoing medical care is being provided to the other five patients, and local health authorities continue surveillance. Mosquito traps have been placed at the airport, and captured specimens are being genetically examined by the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp to determine their origin.
