Fredrikstad municipality imposes immediate ban on Meta AI glasses in all child-focused settings
Effective today, Fredrikstad has prohibited the use of Meta AI glasses by adults and children in schools, kindergartens and any municipal venues where children are present.
Fredrikstad kommune announced a swift, provisional prohibition on Meta AI glasses for anyone working with or attending municipal child-care settings, including schools and kindergartens. Marianne Bekker, director of child services, said the measure takes effect immediately and will stay in place until clearer regulations are provided. The decision aligns with a late-August appeal by Knowledge Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun urging local authorities to ban the devices.
Initially limited to school activities, the ban was quickly broadened after questions about kindergarten use. Line Lofstad Andersen, the municipal school chief, confirmed that principals have been verbally informed and will draft written procedures. The move aims to protect children and staff from covert recording capabilities of the glasses, citing incidents in neighboring Moss kommune as a cautionary example.
