Free eye exams and glasses tackle costly vision-care gaps for New Zealand adults
A free-service eye-care event in Porirua helped dozens of adults who had postponed vision checks because of cost and access issues.
Research commissioned by Specsavers shows that a large share of New Zealand adults postpone eye examinations, with some waiting over six months and a fifth delaying more than two years. To address this, the Painga Project provided free eye tests and prescription glasses at WELLfed in Porirua, serving 60 people, 40 of whom required further appointments. Attendees such as Maggie described dramatic relief from migraines and better night driving after receiving glasses.
Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board chair Sophie Woodburn said the supply of optometrists is adequate but poorly distributed, making access costly, with exams ranging from $30 to $150 and little public funding. Wellington City Mission’s acting missioner Pip Rea highlighted cost as the main obstacle for vulnerable residents, noting strong demand for the free service.
