Free flu vaccine now available to healthy adults caring for vulnerable relatives

The NHS flu-vaccination programme starts today, letting healthy people under 65 qualify for a free jab if they care for or live with someone at risk.

England’s main adult flu-vaccination programme launches on October 1, widening the free-jab criteria to include not only the over-65s and those with chronic illnesses but also healthy adults who have caring responsibilities. People who receive Carer’s Allowance, act as the primary carer for an older or disabled person, or live with someone whose immune system is compromised are now eligible, even if they have no underlying health issues themselves.

Dr Asiya Maula, a private GP at The Health Suite, urges anyone providing daily support - whether as a daughter, partner or friend - to ask their GP or pharmacy about eligibility, stressing that vaccination helps protect both the caregiver and the vulnerable household member. She highlights the dual risk of flu spreading to a high-risk person and the disruption caused if a caregiver falls ill. Vaccinations can be arranged via GP practices, participating pharmacies, or online through the NHS portal and app. The NHS list also includes pregnant women, care-home residents, homeless adults and frontline health workers, among others.

Why it matters

It expands free flu protection to caregivers, reducing risk for vulnerable households this winter.
