Fremskrittspartiet leader warns cabin tax overhaul could hurt ordinary families

Sylvi Listhaug says the tax commission's plan to reassess cabin values may burden typical households as the proposal heads to parliament.

A report from the government-appointed tax commission recommends shifting tax pressure from labour to consumption, property and other fees, and calls for leisure-home values to be assessed at current market levels rather than historic cost. Sylvi Listhaug, leader of Fremskrittspartiet, warns that such a move could harm ordinary families that own cabins passed down through generations and could even trigger a collapse of the cabin market.

The commission further suggests financing tax reductions by harmonising the VAT regime, including raising the low rate on passenger transport and accommodation and introducing VAT on commercial training services. Listhaug dismisses these VAT increases, pointing to Sweden's opposite approach of cutting food VAT and arguing that lower taxes benefit those with limited means. While Fremskrittspartiet seeks to eliminate the wealth tax altogether, it has not issued an ultimatum as parliamentary negotiations continue.

Why it matters

The proposal could reshape tax burdens for many families and affect Norway's cabin market and consumer prices.
