French basketball star Nicolas Batum announces retirement after 21-year career

Nicolas Batum, a 37-year-old veteran of French and American basketball, officially retired after a 21-year career that included 18 seasons in the NBA. He shared a farewell video on his personal accounts, stating his desire to return home after a long tenure abroad. Batum’s professional path started in Pont-l’Evêque, progressed through the Pro A league with Le Mans, and then led him to NBA stints with the Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Clippers.

Over his career he earned 177 caps for the French national team, captured the 2013 EuroBasket title, and secured two Olympic silver medals. He also confirmed his decision to end his international career following the Paris 2024 Olympics. The announcement marks the conclusion of a distinguished era for French basketball.
