French court rules cosmic radiation contributed to flight attendant's breast cancer

A court in Bayonne has officially recognized cosmic radiation as one of the causes of Sophie Lainault’s breast cancer, allowing her to retire early with full medical reimbursement.

In a landmark decision in the southwestern French town of Bayonne, a judge concluded that cosmic radiation was a contributing factor to the breast cancer of former Air France flight attendant Sophie Lainault. The court also identified passive smoking and prolonged night work as additional occupational risks, reflecting historical practices such as smoking on flights before 2000. Lainault, now in remission, accumulated 12,600 flight hours from 1989 to 2019, with more than half of those flights occurring at night and often over polar routes where exposure to space-originating particles is greatest.

The ruling grants her the right to early retirement and ensures that any subsequent treatment will be fully reimbursed by the French health system. Legal experts suggest the judgment could pave the way for other crew members to file similar claims, especially after a recent Harvard Medical School study highlighted elevated radiation-related cancer deaths among pilots and flight attendants. Air France said it had no role in the litigation and reiterated that staff health and safety remain top priorities.
