French driver arrested in Oslo after 45 unpaid traffic fines

Police in Oslo detained a 22-year-old French citizen who could not produce a licence and owed fines from 45 traffic-camera violations.

In the early hours of Sunday, Oslo police stopped a 22-year-old French national driving in Bestum and discovered he lacked a legitimate licence. A deeper review uncovered that he had been recorded by photo-enforcement devices on 45 separate occasions, leaving a substantial amount of unpaid fines. Operation leader Eirik Sannes explained that foreign nationals can be harder to reach for fine collection, prompting the arrest for alleged evasion.

He advised that settling the penalties promptly is advisable, as the state may later seek larger sums or even impose a custodial sentence. Unresolved traffic-violation cases are being monitored for further action.

Why it matters

The case highlights challenges in enforcing traffic fines against foreign drivers and the potential for criminal prosecution.
