French finance ministry confirms cyber theft of data belonging to hundreds of thousands of taxpayers

Late on August 13, the French Finance Ministry disclosed that a cyber intrusion had penetrated the General Direction of Public Finances, resulting in the theft of personal and professional data for approximately 700,000 taxpayers. The attacker announced on August 12 that the breach occurred in late June, a statement later. Monitoring platform FrenchBreaches, which obtained the information from the hackers, reported the scale of the leak.

Ongoing investigations are working to identify precisely which data were accessed and the total number of victims. The ministry pledged to send individualized notices to those affected, detailing the compromised information and recommending precautionary steps. Additional findings will be made public as the inquiry progresses.
