French-flagged vessel ABEILLE MARENGO to resume seabed survey for Crete-Cyprus power cable
The Hellenic Coast Guard has filed an exemption request for the French-flagged ship ABEILLE MARENGO to conduct a marine survey ahead of laying the high-voltage cable linking Crete and Cyprus.
The Hellenic Coast Guard announced that an exemption has been lodged to permit the French-flagged vessel ABEILLE MARENGO (IMO 9388613) to perform a comprehensive marine survey for the upcoming high-voltage cable connecting Crete with Cyprus. The survey will use a multi-beam echo-sounder, side-scan sonar, magnetometer and video systems to capture precise seabed conditions along the entire route, enabling the selection of the optimal final alignment for cable laying.
Additionally, geotechnical core samples will be taken from depths up to 700 metres to determine appropriate cable protection methods. The ship, presently in Naples, is required to inform the Hydrographic Service, Submarine Administration and the naval command at least 72 hours before starting work and provide daily updates throughout the operation. No further changes to the research route have been announced.
Why it matters
The survey is a critical step toward establishing a new electricity link that could boost energy security for Greece and Cyprus.
