French Foreign Legion soldier escapes kidnapping by ex-FARC dissidents in Colombia
A French Foreign Legion corporal held by ex-FARC dissidents in Nariño managed to flee and reach a police station after four days in the wilderness.
José Olger Melo Charry, a corporal serving in the French Foreign Legion, was abducted by the EMC, a leading dissident faction of the former FARC, during a leave period in Colombia's Nariño department. After being held for multiple days, he broke free and endured four days navigating the jungle on his own. He reached a police station on Saturday night and was subsequently air-lifted to Pasto, the capital of Nariño. In Pasto he was admitted to a medical facility for observation, accompanied by his relatives. Authorities confirmed his safe arrival and ongoing care.
