French government to convene emergency meeting on fuel price relief measures

Amid soaring pump prices, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is calling an urgent session of the relevant ministries on Monday at Matignon. Diesel prices have hit €2.41 per litre on average, while SP95-E10 sits at €2.17, prompting the administration to seek relief for the poorest motorists. Economy Minister Roland Lescure highlighted a €100 assistance program for the most financially strained drivers, but half of the eligible recipients have not submitted applications.

Officials have dismissed the idea of a large-scale subsidy similar to the 2022 scheme and also rejected calls for tax reductions or price-freezing measures. While neighboring European countries are introducing fiscal relief, France is also considering a price-cap mechanism to be implemented by early 2027, modeled on Luxembourg and Belgium.
