French health agency warns desogestrel users of possible meningioma risk

The French drug safety authority has launched an information campaign for women taking desogestrel-based contraceptive pills after a reported link to meningioma.

After identifying a possible connection between desogestrel-containing contraceptives and meningioma, the French Agence nationale de sécurité du médicament is initiating a two-phase outreach to inform affected women. The notice will be sent to users of products such as Antigone, Cerazette, Elfasette, Optimizette and their generic equivalents, as well as to the doctors who prescribe them. Patients, including a thirty-year-old woman from Caen who relies on the pill to manage endometriosis symptoms, reported feeling shocked and anxious upon learning of the alert.

The agency describes meningioma as a typically benign tumor located between the brain and skull. The campaign aims to ensure that women can discuss the risk with their physicians and consider alternative treatments if needed.
