French insurers report massive summer wildfire damage and swift claim settlements
Insurers say this summer's wildfires in Gironde, Landes and Var generated thousands of claims and prompted rapid payouts, highlighting the human toll.
According to France Assureurs, the wildfires that swept Gironde, Landes and Var this summer resulted in a substantial surge of insurance claims, with the majority of residential cases now resolved. Seventy-one percent of all claims have received partial or full compensation, and for losses above €150,000 the settlement rate reaches ninety-three percent. The organization emphasized the exceptional speed of payouts, with many claims settled within two months of the events.
This season's impact dwarfs that of the 2022 fires, which generated about two thousand claims and costs around €80 million. Satellite data recorded nearly 100,000 hectares of forest burned nationwide, including a record 42,000 hectares in Gironde, and the village of Le Porge saw roughly 180 homes destroyed.
