French jihadist Othman Garrido faces trial over alleged execution photos

The special assize court in Paris opened a trial on Monday for Othman Garrido, a 32-year-old Frenchman from Montpelier who spent eight years with Daesh in Syria and Iraq before being expelled from Turkey in 2020. He faces charges of one assassination and two murders committed as part of a terrorist organization, carrying a potential life sentence. Key evidence includes photographs extracted from a phone thought to belong to his wife, depicting a partially veiled individual standing beside a decapitated body with blood on his hands.

While Garrido admits witnessing the executions, he maintains he was not the executioner, and his lawyer stresses that the images alone cannot establish guilt. Additional charges relate to the 2015 public execution of two Iranian nationals in Al-Qaryatayn, where Garrido appears smiling among other militants. The trial will feature testimony from family members and expert witnesses to assess his background, which includes a childhood steeped in jihadist ideology and the loss of his father and brothers in the conflict.
