French National Assembly rejects 2027 Social Security revenue bill by near-unanimous vote

Deputies overwhelmingly voted against the revenue portion of the 2027 Social Security financing bill, effectively discarding the entire proposal.

On a recent sitting, the French National Assembly voted 115-1 to reject the revenue chapter of the 2027 Social Security financing bill, effectively dismissing the whole measure without reviewing the expenditure section. Opposition came from the left, the RN-UDR alliance and the majority of LR deputies; the governing coalition mostly abstained and only one MoDem member voted in favor. Earlier, the bill had been stripped of most of its provisions and was turned down by the social affairs committee.

The unchanged draft will be sent to the Senate for consideration. Meanwhile, the Cour des comptes issued a report urging both the executive and legislators to place Social Security on a path to fiscal balance by 2030, calling immediate corrective action essential.

Why it matters

The rejection signals political resistance to the government's plan to cut the Social Security deficit, affecting future public finances.
