French police detain five suspects linked to theft of Renoir paintings

French authorities have arrested five individuals suspected of stealing several Pierre-Auguste Renoir works from a museum on the Riviera.

In early September, two burglars forced their way into the Renoir museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, located on the French Riviera, and took four paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Subsequent searches recovered two of the works, "Madame Colonna Romano" and "Jeune femme au puits," from the museum's garden, but the remaining two paintings have not yet been found. French police have now detained five suspects believed to be involved in the theft, with two of them identified as the original burglars.

The mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer, Bryan Masson, reported that the missing artworks are collectively worth about nine million euros. The investigation was reported based on its sources. No further details about the whereabouts of the stolen pieces have been released.

Why it matters
