French prosecutors launch inquiry into far-right assaults on Nice demonstrators
Authorities opened a flagrant investigation after protesters in Nice were attacked by individuals believed to belong to the far-right, with several arrests and three people lightly injured.
A flagrant investigation has been initiated by the local judicial police to track down far-right participants in violent episodes that occurred during a protest in Nice. Prosecutor Damien Martinelli said the probe aims to identify and arrest those responsible for aggravated assaults captured on Saturday's video recordings. Of the 59 individuals detained, 11 are believed to be linked to the far-right, with five already known to law-enforcement and seized prior to the clashes.
The footage shows masked men in black confronting non-violent demonstrators, resulting in three light injuries treated by firefighters. The prefecture estimated that around a hundred masked far-right militants gathered to physically confront the crowd of roughly 2,300 protesters. Mayor Eric Ciotti condemned the attacks, while interior minister Laurent Nuñez and Montpellier mayor Michaël Delafosse highlighted similar far-right aggression in other cities.
