French savers boost Livret A deposits amid inflation and fuel concerns
Facing high inflation and a looming fuel crisis, French households increased their Livret A savings in August, adding a notable amount to the account.
Amid persistent inflation and the threat of another fuel shortage, French consumers reinforced their Livret A savings in August, contributing a substantial amount just before the school year began. The public savings manager, Caisse des dépôts et consignations, links this behavior to the recent increase in the Livret A's interest rate. Philippe Crevel, founder of Le Cercle de l'épargne, highlights that August typically yields strong deposits, with only two instances of net outflows since 2009, both occurring when the rate was cut.
In parallel, the Livret de développement durable et solidaire attracted a net inflow, while the Livret d'épargne populaire, which had been losing funds since March, managed to draw additional savings as well. Overall, the trend reflects a broader shift toward regulated savings instruments as households seek protection against rising living costs.
