French shopkeepers and citizens confront rioters, sparking nationwide support

Videos of shop owners and locals defending their premises against looters have gone viral, prompting a wave of public solidarity across France.

Social media footage showing French merchants and residents fighting back against rioters has captured massive public attention. In Nice, Pierre, a Micromania employee, confronted looters even after being kicked and having objects thrown at him, prompting the mayor to visit him. In Paris, a newly opened mobile-phone shop owned by Hassan was looted, leading to a fundraiser that quickly amassed over €88,000.

Additional videos feature a female shopkeeper wielding an iron bar, a resident pouring hot water on attackers, and other citizens physically stopping looters in cities such as Saint Etienne and Mulhouse. The weekend’s unrest injured hundreds of police, gendarmes and firefighters and resulted in roughly 2,400 arrests, with President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu pledging strict repercussions.
