French shopkeepers mobilize to prevent further looting amid upcoming protests

Retailers across France are organizing a coordinated response to avert new incidents of vandalism and theft as a new wave of protests looms.

As a large-scale protest approaches, French shop owners are taking collective action to shield their premises from potential disorder. Many have already experienced severe looting, with Antoine, who runs Atelier Amelot, describing a night when his clothing-customisation shop was ransacked by both vandals and passers-by, leaving him unwilling to restock. He spent hours filing a police report and is now prioritising insurance matters and cleanup.

Across the capital, visible signs of recent pillaging remain near the Place de la République, along the Canal Saint-Martin and in the Haut-Marais. Merchants are coordinating to ensure they are not the next victims, hoping state intervention will prevent further tragedy.

Why it matters

Retail disruption could affect local economies and public order if protests turn violent.
