French student protests disrupt classes in over five hundred schools

On Wednesday, classes were halted in 518 French schools as student and university demonstrations spread, with 40 high schools reporting disturbances.

A nationwide day of protest saw more than five hundred schools across France suspend lessons, either fully or partially. Authorities in the Paris metropolitan area and the Île-de-France region announced that 40 secondary schools experienced incidents of disorder, violence, clashes or vandalism. The demonstrations, initially led by pupils and university students, have attracted broader segments of the public. President Macron's administration has so far appeared unable to contain the unrest.

Why it matters

The school closures signal expanding civil unrest that could challenge the French government's ability to maintain order.
