French supercomputer plant expands capacity with public funding

A French high-tech factory in Angers, now fully owned by public capital, has enlarged its premises to boost large-scale supercomputer assembly.

The Angers facility in Maine-et-Loire, formerly a Bull manufacturing plant, has been restructured under complete public ownership after its split from Atos. Inside the expansive, meticulously clean space, dozens of technicians in white antistatic coats handle electronic cards that are later mounted in large supercomputer cabinets. The plant’s atmosphere is now quiet and climate-controlled, a stark contrast to its noisier past.

Company leaders reported that the site is being enlarged to strengthen its capacity for assembling large-scale supercomputers, a service that remains singular across Europe. This expansion underscores the strategic importance placed on high-performance computing by public investors.

Why it matters
