French unions and yellow-vest protesters vow weekly actions against government policies
After a massive Saturday protest, French unions and yellow-vest activists announced plans for repeated demonstrations and sit-ins to pressure the government.
Saturday saw an estimated 410,000 participants across France demonstrating against rising living costs. In the wake of that turnout, trade unions and the yellow-vest movement declared that protests will be organized each week to maintain pressure on the authorities. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, heading the La France insoumise list, led the Paris procession and cautioned that the anger in the country remains unheard.
The yellow-vest coordination urged supporters to begin mobilising from Friday evening, planning “casserolade” gatherings and sit-ins in front of the National Assembly and municipal offices. They framed the government's approach as a drift toward authoritarianism and called for continued public demonstrations.
Why it matters
Continued weekly protests could intensify social tension and force policy changes on cost-of-living issues in France.
