Freshman Jay Timmons Earns First Black Stripe in Ohio State Camp
Jay Timmons became the inaugural Ohio State freshman to receive a black stripe after the first week of preseason camp.
In the initial phase of Ohio State's preseason football camp, newcomer Jay Timmons secured the coveted black stripe, marking the first time a freshman has achieved this honor. Safety Earl Little Jr. praised Timmons for his quick adaptation, highlighting both his mental readiness and physical contributions, such as a sack during an 11-on-11 session. The highly ranked recruit, previously the nation’s No. 25 prospect and a former Florida State commit, is already competing for nickel back duties.
The Buckeyes are addressing the vacancy left by Lorenzo Styles Jr., who departed for the New Orleans Saints in the recent NFL draft. Fellow defensive backs Jermaine Mathews Jr. and returning cornerback Brock Boyd have also been rotating at the position. The black stripe has previously been awarded to freshmen wide receivers Brock Boyd and Chris Henry Jr. after spring practice.
Why it matters
It signals a promising start for a top recruit and potential reshaping of Ohio State's defensive backfield.
