Fresno Unified faces costly fallout from false hate-crime accusation against coach

The controversy began when Fresno Unified School Board Trustee Keshia Thomas accused legendary Bullard High football coach Don Arax of directing a racial slur at her son during practice in 2022, resulting in his removal from coaching after 24 seasons. Arax retained his teaching position but filed a defamation lawsuit, and a 2025 deposition showed Thomas had not actually claimed the slur, later offering a vague apology.

Former superintendent Bob Nelson testified that the district failed to investigate the allegation or anticipate damage to Arax’s reputation. To date, the district has spent close to $370,000 defending both itself and Thomas, and a court judgment could cost millions more. Fresno Unified, already coping with enrollment declines and budget cuts, is now debating whether to stop funding Thomas’s defense and to distance itself from liability.
