Friend sentenced to 30 days for negligent boating that caused fatal crash

A man in his twenties received a 30-day prison term after being found guilty of negligence that led to his friend Preben Meyer's death in a boat accident near Arendal.

In a case heard by the Agder District Court, a man in his twenties was found guilty of negligent actions that resulted in the death of his friend Preben Meyer, 25, during a boating accident off Arendal. The vessel struck an underwater iron stake, causing the boat to capsize and throwing four of the seven occupants into the water. Emergency responders confirmed Meyer's death, while the other passengers escaped serious injury.

The court sentenced the driver to 30 days of unconditional imprisonment and revoked his licence to operate a boat requiring a captain's certificate for two years, citing the boat’s speed as a critical factor. During the trial, the defendant expressed deep personal sorrow but maintained he was not criminally liable for the fatal outcome. It is unclear whether he will appeal the verdict.
